Session: Wie sich 2016 mit Recorded Music Geld verdienen lässt - Stems, Sample Packs und andere neue Einnahmequellen für Künstler_innen und Labels

Is there really no way to make money from recorded music sales in 2016? Is it all about live income and the occasional sync license, or are there actually other ways to make money from recorded music, regardless if your fanbase is a couple of hundred million strong or just a few hundred?

One year ago the new audio format Stems launched as an open source project initiated by Native Instruments. Quickly veteran DJs like Carl Cox, Francois Kervokian and many others became fans and ambassadors of the format and its creative potential for innovative and fun DJ sets. While the music industry generally shifts more and more towards revenue streams creating 0.0 (and then some more zeros) per play or stream, the Stems format helps generate significant revenue for artists and labels as a premium priced download format. And Stems is just one of several innovative new ways to make money.

This panel will explore how artists and labels can boost their income by supporting innovative new revenue streams like Stems, Sample packs, Maschine Expansions and several other opportunities.

Daniel Haaksman, Man Recordings

Few individuals can claim to have done so much for musical exchange across the globe as Berlin based DJ, producer, journalist and label boss Daniel Haaksman. With the release of his 2004 compilation "Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats" he introduced the sound of Rio ́s favelas for the first time to a global audience, parallely creating the genre term „Baile Funk“ (in Brasil, the music is called „Funk Carioca“).

From 2005 Daniel gave the sound of Rio De Janeiro its own platform and the Berlin treatment and started Man Recordings, today considered one of the leading international labels in tropical bass music. Man Recordings has released countless records by artists such as such as Diplo, Schlachthofbronx, Crookers, Bert On Beats or Daniel Haaksman himself amongst others, as well as the creme of Brazilian artists such as Deize Tigrona, João Brasil, Lovefoxxx, Marina Gasolina or Edu K.

Daniel´s own musical output includes various EP releases, the „Rambazamba“ album, plus dozens of smashing, official remixes for artists such as Ray Baretto, Gotan Project, Bonde Do Rolê, Schlachthofbronx, Waldemar Bastos or Lord Nelson amongst others. As a DJ, he has travelled the world and played countless clubs, festivals and events, from Hollywood wedding parties to gunman patrolled bailes in Rio´s favelas. His party friendly mix of baile funk, house, trap, bubbling, kuduro and everything in between has excited audiences everywhere. Daniel knows no musical rules, except for one: A DJ has to rock the party.

Since 2013 Daniel hosts the weekly radio mix show „Luso FM“ on German public radio „WDR Funkhaus Europa“. In February 2016, Daniel released his second album "African Fabrics" to international acclaim. Currently, he´s working on a live show version of "African Fabrics.

Marc Romboy, Systematic Recordings

When it comes to Marc Romboy and electronic music, he has pretty much been there and
done that. Over the course of the last two plus decades, the German born DJ, producer and label boss has become synonymous with a soulful, vocal infused house and techno sound that has taken him all over the world. As well as releasing on only the most influential labels, from Ovum to Gruuv, Planet e to 20:20 Vision, he is also the sole mastermind behind the influential Systematic Recordings label and has been since 2004.

That label is home to established artists like Blake Baxter and Booka Shade, Robert Babicz
and Stephan Bodzin, but it is Marc’s own output that most defines it. Nowadays an album
specialist, 2013 saw him release the captivating “Taiyo“ (an album made in collaboration with Japan’s Ken Ishii that married Marc’s hardware techniques with Ken’s love of digital synths to stunning effect) whilst a year later came Shades, a personal compilation of new tracks, career highlights and standout remixes.

Despite being a key player for so long, Marc is still as relevant as ever and remains right at the sharp end of electronic music. Proof of that comes in the form of his DJ schedule, which takes him from fabric to Fuse, Berghain to Rex, as well as to not one but two separate Boiler Room shows. The first was solo in Berlin, the second was a b2b with frequent sonic sparring partner Stephan Bodzin in Sao Paolo. Both proved Marc to be a dexterous DJ who never relies on obviousness or gimmicks, instead telling truly musical stories that place dancers right at the heart of the action.

Topping off the latest chapter in this enduring pioneer’s musical adventure was the „10 Years of Systematic“ compilation, which includes new tracks from the artists Marc most cherishes such as Audiojack, Jimpster and Dusty Kid. Proving that the label, which is now past its 100th release, has a global following, the compilation made it in the Beatport Top 5 Albums and remained in the Top 20 weeks after release. A positive force within the world of underground house and techno, Marc Romboy never sits still, never rests on his laurels and continually confounds expectations, just as any proper artist should...

Meike Nolte, Beatport


Die derzeitige Account Managerin bei Beatport startete ihre Karriere im Jahre 2002 beim elektronischen Musiklabel WMF Records. Nachdem sie danach für das Label Sender Records tätig war, betrieb sie schon sehr bald ihre eigene Booking Agentur 'Pointer Agency' und war gleichzeitig für das Marketing und die PR der weltweit bekannten Labels Minus und Plus 8 verantwortlich. Danach war Sie bei BPitch Control als Head of International Promotion and Marketing für Künstler wie Moderat, Paul Kalkbrenner und Dillon zuständig. 2012 wechselte Sie zum Streamingservice WiMP/Tidal und leitete ab 2013 als Countrymanagerin deren deutsches Office in Berlin.

Nadja Lind, Lucidflow

When it comes to describing Nadja Lind, a dispassionate third person box ticking exercise doesn’t really cut it. Sure, she has the credentials: a DJing career that kicked off on New Years Eve 2003 and has spawned a typically globetrotting calendar (b2b with Terry Francis at Fabric London, b2b with Silicone Soul@ Time Club Manila, Circo Loco DC10 Ibiza, Weekend Club, Berghain Kantine Berlin…), a production career that has seen several works as either a solo artist or with Klartraum production buddy Helmut Ebritsch, and the dizzying heights of being co-owner of the Lucidflow imprint, a record label which has seriously started to rack up quality releases and remixes, seeing the likes of John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo pluck from the catalogue, a seal of quality like no other. Tick, tick, tick… the facts are all there.

What this doesn’t get across is the sheer warmth of personality that Nadja brings to your world once invited in. As barmy as a bag of cats, you can guarantee that there is one person at the gig that will be jumping harder than all the rest, and that is the lady in charge of the buttons herself. It’s true; I’ve seen it at fabric London. Beaming smiles and effervescent personality, this shines through in her music: the serious tropes of Dub Techno and Deep Tech House are drawn upon and spun through a web of energy, a jolt from the defibrillators to the weary heart of the House music scene.

Her ceaseless energy is now spreading through into her performances; not content to just spin other people’s tracks one after another, Klartraum have branched out into live performances featuring their own tracks and live jams. Also, since the start of 2012, Nadja’s sets (barring her marathon 12 hour Audio Olympian excursions) are now populated purely with her own hand crafted distinctive sound, thanks to a back catalogue that is pretty much humungous. Venues such as the world renowned Fabric and infamous Kazantip festival have been treated to this unique vision.

Continents and countries such as Australia, India, Kenya, USA, Asia, Mexico have been treated to the Nadja touch. A cheeky partnership with those fans of Dark Rooms and Dubs, Silicone Soul, is blooming into some exclusive DJ mix and label collaboration parties. Plus the eternal draw of a bulging production catalogue that will continue to deliver a spectrum from Dub and Chill Out to the straight up Techno but also Ambient of her Aashya alias, working solo and with illustrious names such as Brendon Moeller, Saytek, Grunbox, Omar Salgado, G-Man (a.k.a. LFO), Lulu Rouge, Paul Loraine to name a few. Rumour has it Nadja is working on a machine that can slow down time while letting her operate at double speed because, quite obviously, there is so much happening in the Lind world.So there we have it; the past, present and future of Nadja Lind, all boxes ticked, facts present and correct. As will all good things, she is much more than the sum of her already fantastic parts.


Steffen Harning, Milk & Sugar


Producer, songwriter and founder of multiple gold awarded German DJ team "Milk & Sugar". Owner of MCP music production studio in Munich, co-founder of independent record label Milk & Sugar Recordings. International releases on Universal Music, Sony, Warner, Polydor, Kontor, EMI, Ministry Of Sound, Embassy Of Music, Ultra, B1 Recordings, All Around The World, Positiva, Milk & Sugar Recordings, Enormous Tunes, Mother Recordings, Simma Black, Off Recodings and many more.
