Die VUT Indie Days-Panelist_innen: Janine Hélène Wülker

Damit Ihr mehr über die Panelist_innen der VUT Indie Days, die im Rahmen der Berlin Music Week vom 3. bis 5. September 2014 im Postbahnhof in Berlin stattfinden, erfahrt, haben wir sie gebeten, uns ein paar Fragen zu beantworten.

Janine Wülker ist bei finetunes für Strategic Marketing zuständig und wird auf dem Panel  “Revolution Girl Style Now! (Bikini Kill) – How To Achieve Diversity In The Music Business” am Donnerstag, den 04. September 2014 von 16:15 bis 17 Uhr, mit Sonja Eismann, Helienne Lindvall und Thom Cummings über Diversität in der Musikbranche diskutieren.

Wir haben mit ihr unter anderem über die Herausforderungen für unabhängige Musikunternehmen gesprochen:

Where do you see the independent sector in five years from now?

The independent sector might consolidate even more within the next years. Organizations like MERLIN show, that this kind of consolidation does not mean merging companies in the economic understanding, but in terms of synergetic collaboration and representation. Being part of these very valuable independent, closely cooperating networks needs a certain professionalization of the stakeholder himself – which means he needs tools, knowledge and a very well defined strategic and economic setup to extend a market share in a more and more digital and atomized music market.

What are the current challenges for independent companies?

I think that Indies will face the need for a specific technical professionalization. In addition to that, they need to offer integrated services which offer not only a value concerning sales but also concerning service quality. The challenge for Independent service providers will be balancing pricing, technological state of the art and a clear, more economic approach by not letting down creativity, artist development and real partnerships where partners are working and communicating on an equal level.

Vinyl, tape deck and stuff: Which medium evokes a happy association – or even the
happiest one? Would you share it with us?

Nostalgic association: Tapes, but I don't buy tapes anymore
Happy association: Vinyl – I am buying a lot – and digital formats. Digital always makes me happy if I want to get my hands on a tune directly. And I don't have to wait for 2 weeks to receive music I discovered e.g. from a US-artist. It already happens a lot that I buy the digital version directly and a vinyl at the concert.

There is so much great music out there – what is your way of discovering new tunes?

Music is rarely getting "old" in my eyes, so even discovering "classics" by reading a book about a label's or artist's biography is about discovering new and exciting tunes. I love hanging out in my favorite record store in Hamburg, Groove City, chatting about news and genres with some coffee and cake, walking out with a box of new records. On the other hand I would not want to miss sitting in front of my laptop for hours and browsing the web - blogs, label websites, facebook, soundcloud or platforms like resident advisor, hypetrak etc. More or less this happens once a week and I get lost in it for several hours creating new playlists and searching the stores to buy the favorites (digital & Vinyl).
